On the Mend

Well, it’s been a really challenging day here in sicksville in front of the TV. Not only have I been laid low, now Jack is percolating with ick on the couch. We both have prescriptions from our respective docs and Christie, saint that she is, dropped off potato soup and a giant stack of DVDs. But I’m really hoping at this point that we’ve seen the worst of it. I actually think that human contact may have healing powers for me, because just a quick 8 foot minimum distance visit from a friend had a hugely cheering effect.
For a blog post copout, I’m hitting up livejournal’s Writer’s Block feature. Today’s question is: What three items would you place in a time capsule to help future generations understand you?
I’m sitting here surrounded by material things. I mean, there’s so many material things around here it’s almost kind of gross. Who needs all these things? And how much do they really represent me? They only represent these tiny little bits and many of those bits are awfully… shallow, I guess.
The first thing I would put in a time capsule is an easy choice – my Miquelrius notebook. It’s pretty much a perfect reference guide to what the heck I am about, since I write almost all my action items in there. I’ve been using it since 2006, so it’s got a pretty broad swathe of my activities documented in it. Sometimes I think it’s the most valuable possession I have, the one thing I’d like to keep in a safe deposit box.
After that things get muddy. I tend to assume that my time capsule would be dug up in some Mad Max post-apocalypse future so that including my iPod would be useless. So what musical thing could a person include that would be most likely to be usable? I wonder how well a drum would hold up in the time capsule? I guess most ordinary non-animal skin drum heads are made of tough stuff so I’ll include a drum.
The last thing I can think of to put in would represent the importance to me of comfort – so I choose my glow-in-the-dark bears pillow. yes, I still have it, and I launder it regularly so I don’t want to hear it! I do get attached.
